Glossary

A collection of terms often used when talking about Jamstack and associated web technologies.

Dynamic server

A dynamic server generates responses at the time a request is received, typically by running application code, querying databases or other services, and rendering templates into markup for each request. This is in contrast to serving files which were pre-rendered in advance.

Because they must do work for every request, dynamic servers usually need to be provisioned, scaled, secured and maintained as critical infrastructure. Jamstack sites aim to reduce reliance on dynamic servers by pre-rendering where possible and serving the results from a CDN, using APIs and serverless functions for dynamic functionality.
